Over 1,000 emergency protests were held yesterday Thursday, January 11 - in cities and towns across the United States on less than 48 hours notice. In response to Bush's speech announcing his plans to deepen the war in Iraq and send more soldiers and Iraqis to their deaths, people came out into the streets of their communities to make clear the growing and powerful public opposition to Bush's war for Empire
When the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition circulated its appeal for local activists to stage emergency protests in response to Bush’s speech, it was nearly impossible to keep up with the flood of emails from local areas announcing their plans to protest on January 11.
1, 000 Emergency Protests Take Place in the United States the day after Bush announces escalation of the Iraq war
Los Angeles -.Over 1,000 emergency protests were held yesterday Thursday, January 11 - in cities and towns across the United States on less than 48 hours notice.
In Los Angeles, more than 300 people massed up at the Wilshire-Western intersection while in other 19 places in the city, other mass actions were held.
In San Francisco, more than 3,000 people marched and also massed up in major areas in the Bay Area to show to opposition to the war.
In Seattle, more than 60 people went out to demosntrate despite the wintry blast and the heavy snow that blaketed the northwest city.
There were also demonstrations in the different parts of New York city and other areas.
Tipping Point Reached
"This is a clear indication that the anti-war sentiment in the country has reached a tipping point," said Brian Becker, national coordinator of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition. "It is not only a majority sentiment but it will, just as in Vietnam, become an irresistible political force in domestic politics in the months to come."
There has been a huge outpouring in response to A.N.S.W.E.R.'s plans for the March on the Pentagon on March 17, the 4th anniversary of the war in Iraq. Transportation Centers are being set up across the country to bring people to Washington DC to participate in this Global Day of Action against the war.
ANSWER is also organizing for the January 27 demonstration in Washington, D.C. If you want to join ANSWER in supporting this action, call the ANSWER office at 202-544-3389
