Youth, students denounce ‘hogwash white-wash’ Demand justice for slain bishop in Mendiola rally
Militant youth group Anakbayan today denounced what it called the government’s ‘hogwash white-wash’ of Bishop Ramento’s murder.
The youth group marched to Mendiola with hundreds of bishops, laity and civil libertarians to demand justice for the slain bishop.
“The government has tried but miserably failed in its attempt to downplay massive indignation against Bishop Ramento’s brutal killing. The robbery angle is a farce and we all know it, ” said Eleanor de Guzman, Anakbayan national chairperson.
De Guzman said that the government is now applying another ploy to justify the continuous spate of extra-juidicial killings.
“We wouldn’t be surprised if in the near future we see a ‘shift’ in police and government investigations. This time instead of dwindling and stalling, the likes of Task Force Usig and the Melo Commission can just resort to whitewashing and case closed. How convenient for them,” she said.
“What is even more disturbing is that Bishop Ramento was the first national, if not international, political figure to have been a victim of extra-judicial killings under the Arroyo administration. It seems that the government and the military is now becoming more and more emboldened to kill. Is this a prelude, a sign of darker times ahead for activist leaders and civil libertarians alike?” De Guzman asked.
“This government has shown no respect and respite for a great man of peace and and a servant of the church. Only the most wicked of all evils can resort to such an appalling act.”
“The loss of Bishop Ramento is a great loss especially to the youth of today who are left with very few good men like him to emulate,” said De Guzman. ###
