RAGE, RATS AND ROCK N ROLL By Rey Agudana
New York- September 3, 2005, as New Yorkers bade farewell to summer, the militant Filipino American Youth organization ANAKBAYAN-New York/New Jersey Chapter kicked off it's "Gotta Go Glo" Campaign together with the NY Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines and the NYC For Gloria's Ouster Coalition by holding a "Rock Against Gloria!" or RAGE 2 concert at the C-Note in Manhattan's east village.
"Tonight we are launching the "Gotta Go Glo" campaign that aims to attack the illegitimate Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo regime by holding a cultural event for the youth" stated Arcy Yuson of the youth group ANAKBAYAN-NY/NJ that co-sponsored tonights event. "By the coming weeks, we will be launching major protest actions such as the Rapid Action Teams or R.A.Ts" Yuson added. Arroyo will be coming to New York to attend the UN's assembly and the R.A.Ts vowed that they will follow where ever Arroyo's going to be in New York.
"Akil Dasan" who is not Filipino himself but can sing and rap Tagalog songs and is very close to the Filipino artists community opens the show with an ecclectic blend of crowd pleasing songs.
Following Dasan is the legendary Filipino power pop band "Rubberband", one of the longest standing Pinoy Rock band in the East Coast whose vocalist helped secure the venue for tonight's activity.
Up next on the bill is the notorious political punk rock band "Kadena" acclaimed for it's staunch political charging assault of oi-punk rock propaganda all clad in red shirts behind an enormous red back drop that read "OUST GLORIA!".
Shortly after, another New York favorite, the famous "Kontrast" hip hop duo with their satirical rhymes, political poetry and energetic beats deliver a diverse set for the evening.
Up and coming hard and heavy rock unleashed as "Blue Mellon Pop" another local Pinoy band from Elmhurst, Queens brought the Manila Pinoy Rock flavor for the evening amidst an enthusiastic screaming crowd.
Capping the night is another crowd pleaser that further brings the music closer to home as "Kanang Kamay from the state of New Jersey hit the stage with an even growing loud response from the crowd.
"New York city is one of the world's cultural center and Filipino-American talents are very much a part of the city's rich cultural offerings. But what really stands out is that not only are there very good Filipino-American cultural performers but also a lot of progrsessive and concerned artists" states Rey Agudana, a cultural worker and a member of the NY Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines (NYCHRP). "This is proven by the positive response from the Filipino artists in New York that supported tonight’s event." RAGE 1, according to Agudana stood for Rock Against Erap which he also helped organized during the height of anti-Erap protests in New York.
"Gotta Go Glo's" scheduled activities include an advanced "unwelcoming committee action" at the Philippine Consulate 556 Fifth Ave. NY, NY on Septeber 12, monday 5:30 pm.
September 15, thursday, a major Filipino community protest action will be held also at the Philippine Consulate and is expected to be attended by various anti-Arroyo protesters including veteran anti-Marcos activists and solidarity friends and allies such as the International Action center (IAC).
