The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of Ronald Ian Dellomes Evidente, 25 years old. He was arrested on April 21, 2004 at 4pm right after conducting an electoral campaign for the partylist Anak ng Bayan.

Ian was arrested by the officers of the Special Operations Group of the NORPDO and PNP-Dumaguete, Negros Island who were in civilian clothes. He was handcuffed and detained at the PNP Station in Dumaguete City without reading him his constitutional rights.

The warrant of arrest issued by Judge Rogeciano T. Rivera of the Municipal Trial Court of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental accused Ian of the crime of murder, a non-bailable offense. The warrant did not mention who Ian allegedly murdered. He also never knew nor met the co-accused in the warrant.

Ian is the 5th nominee of Anak ng Bayan, a progressive partylist of youth and students vying for congress seats in the coming May 10, 2004 elections. He is also the Regional Vice Chairperson of BAYAN- Negros Island and has been representing the region in the various national meetings of BAYAN. He was also attended the last National Council Meeting of BAYAN in January of this year.

Ian is a known personality and mass leader of both the sectoral and multisectoral people's movement in Dumaguete. Inspite of his high public visibility, he never received summons from the prosecutor's office for a preliminary investigation thus was denied of the right to answer allegations at the first level of the court proceedings.

In two occasions, a few days before he was arrested, the Provincial PNP Intelligence Officer, SPO4 Gilbert Arinasa maliciously accused, in radio interviews, progressive partylist groups like Anak ng Bayan and Bayan Muna as "communist-terrorist" groups . He also singled out Ian as a "communist terrorist.

The arrest of Ian is the latest of the many cases of harassments and political repression against progressive organizations and the people's movement in general. In this election, the military and the Arroyo regime has launched a systematic campaign to maliciously slander, malign and discredit the progressive partylist organizations who are currently riding high in the latest poll surveys.

BAYAN demands the immediate and unconditional release of Ronald Ian Dellomes Evidente.
