Letter challenging President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to own up to and rectify her mistake to the people in light of the apparent disinformation in bringing the Philippines into the US war on Iraq based on the non-existent threat of WMDs.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: OWNING UP TO THEIR LIES
Dear Editors,
How much more evidence that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq do we need to hear and see for the US and its allies, including our president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, to own up to their disinformation and bad faith in launching their war of aggression against Iraq and its people?
Before the invasion, Dr. Hans Blix of the UN weapons inspection team has held that there were no weapons of mass destruction (WMD) nor an existing weapons program in Iraq before the invasion. Now with nearly a year of US occupation, even the CIA's chief weapons hunter in Iraq, David Kay, has publicly said that there were no stockpiles of biological or chemical weapons in Iraq and has, since then, resigned from his post.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hastily dragged us into the war and is now equally accountable in this account. Despite our people's opposition to the war, she turned a deaf ear and instead peddled the same line of the threat of WMDs-- now ringing empty with these new developments.
Now that she is running for the presidency, maybe she should own up to this blunder and rectify by calling for the immediate withdrawal of US occupation forces in Iraq and the Filipino support troops she sent there.
Otherwise, the people would remember her in the elections as the president who brought us into this US war of terror and occupation of Iraq apparently based on disinformation and empty threats.
Sincerely yours,
